Can Light Chemical Peels help me?

Yes.

I could end this blog post with that simple of an answer, but because I want to educate you with the facts; I will go on into more detail. 😉

I still cant believe how many people fear the term chemical peel.  Well, maybe because the word chemical has a negative connotation or the word peel gives you visions of peeling red skin.  So lets first clear that up.

chemical peel

A chemical peel is a body treatment technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin using a chemical solution that causes the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel off.  The regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Thus the term chemical peel is derived. Some types of chemical peels can be purchased and administered without a medical license, however people are advised to seek professional help from a dermatologist, esthetician, plastic surgeon, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or otolaryngologist on a specific type of chemical peel before a procedure is performed.”

Today, I will discuss light chemical peels, being that is what I am most familiar with and the most common.

Here is a list of what light peels can do for your skin.

-Improve the texture of your skin

-Increase product efficiency

-Soften pore size

-Increase the cell turnover rate of your skin

-Improve your skin’s ability to hold moisture

-Help your skin produce more collagen

-Reduce fine lines

-Decrease hyper-pigmentation

-Unclog pores and help clear up acne

-Leave your skin smooth

-Make your skin softer

-Make your skin look more even-toned

-Give your skin a “glow” and “dewy” complexion

-Improve minor scarring

However…A light chemical peel cannot make dramatic improvements to deep wrinkles or very sagging skin. Conditions like that need to be treated with lasers, deep chemical peels or cosmetic surgery.  And also keep in mind that while you will see instant results after the first treatment; it is highly recommended to get a series of peels to experience the full and continued improvements.

Also keep in mind that not all peels solutions are the same. Depending on your skin type and concerns, the right peel must be used.

Sensitive Skin…You will get the benefits from a Lactic Acid peel, because they are milder and gentler than other peel solutions.  Lactic Acid is derived from milk and whilst it is excellent at resurfacing the skin it also increases skin’s moisture levels. As the uppermost layers are sloughed away, a smoother textured and healthier skin is revealed.  Another great option for sensitive skin is Mandelic Acid peel.

Oily/Acne Prone skin…Salicylic Peel…It causes shedding of the outer layer of skin leaving you with a smoother, more refined look.  A salicylic acid peel can eliminate the dirt buildup and bacteria that forms on your skin without being too harsh. This is particularly important if you have very sensitive skin. Salicylic acid peels are also a very good option for people with acne prone skin. Salicylic acid treatments are often used to combat the excessive shine associated with excessively oily skin – especially when the oil build up is in the “T-zone”.

Aging, and/or overall skin improvements: Glycolic Acid peel.   Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid naturally occurring in sugar cane that helps loosens the thickened surface layers that appear as dry, rough, scaly skin. As the uppermost layers are sloughed away, a smoother textured and healthier skin is revealed. Glycolic peels are used to treat mild sun damage, pigmentation and loss of elasticity.
